Okay, so you're probably thinking that I'm crazy for putting this much effort into a snack for four-year-olds who probably won't appreciate it very much. Or maybe you're thinking that I'm that over-achiever, trying to out-do the next mom. Here's my story behind this snack. It's Halloween and we all know what that means.....C.A.N.D.Y.!!!!!! I love it, my kids love it, and my hubby loves it too. However, from Halloween through Christmas, kids get terribly sick. Why? ....well the germs are flying, but aren't they always? Yes! Why the struggle during this time of year? Is it because of being cooped up inside due to frigid temperatures? Maybe. Here's my thoughts......I once heard that one candy bar and a can of soda pop can suppress the immune system for twelve hours. WOW! Think about all the candy, treats, cookies, and cupcakes that are consumed this time of year. That's a lot of havoc on our poor immune systems. I decided that we're going to really limit our consumption of these "should have sparingly" goodies. And what makes kids excited about fruit....creativity. A little, or a LOT, of flare can go a long ways. The kids devoured these "treats" today and I walked away feeling good about what went into their tummies.
Need an idea for how to get rid of the excessive amounts of candy in your house after Halloween?
Here's a few ideas:
1: Turn it into a math lesson. A tootsie roll is worth a nickel, a snickers bar is worth a quarter....and so on. Let your kids trade their candy in for cash :) They'll be excited and the toy they can purchase with their own money earned from trading will last a lot longer than the candy.
2: Kids too little to do the math or get the cash concept? Give them a flat amount - $5, 10, 20 for ALL their candy. Let them pick out a new toy or movie. Take them to the store though right away and reward them for being healthy to their little bodies.
3: The SWITCH WITCH! She works like the tooth fairy.....shhhhh! Have them set out their candy at night, and see what the SWITCH WITCH brings in exchange....movie tickets, cash.....here's where you get to be creative.
Have a safe, happy, and healthy Halloween!

Love those ideas and love your fruit pumpkin! My kids LOVE fruit and that is a great idea! I end up hiding or getting rid of most of the candy….but I love your ideas! May have to try those!
Julie.....I end up letting the kids pick out five pieces that they want to have, but then the rest gets sent with Erik to work. Otherwise I end up eating most of it! The people at work usually have it gone within half a day :) And we are saved from all the sugar, which my little people just don't need. Too much sugar makes them weepy and C.R.A.N.K.Y. We're all happier in the end.
